SUMMARY:The War Begins: The South Carolina Snow Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Colonel Richard Richardson gathered patriot forces from across the Carolinas to march into the South Carolina backcountry to suppress those loyal to the King.  Known as the Snow Campaign due to the heavy snowfall the militia encountered that December\, this was the first major military operation in South Carolina. On December 22\, patriots won the Battle of the Great Cane Brake and quelled loyalists’ activities for three years. \nThe Revolutionary War Visitor Center hosts this 250th anniversary event. Our program features a dialogue between a patriot and a loyalist as they defend their reasons for choosing rebellion or loyalty to the King. Historian Durant Ashmore will interpret the participants\, routes\, and events of the Snow Campaign.  Finally\, the audience will experience the campaign through the eyes and ears of Richard Richardson and  Joseph Kershaw. Afterwards\, Historic Camden’s Colonial Village will come alive with demonstrations of colonial life.

SUMMARY:Camden District Resolves
DESCRIPTION:On November 5\, 1774\, Judge William Henry Drayton presided over the Circuit Court in Camden.  He delivered a rousing address to the jurors about the colony’s grievances with Great Britain.  The juror’s returned a statement which has been called a “little Declaration of Independence.”  Other circuit courts soon followed and South Carolinians edged closer to revolution. \nJoin us on November 1 to learn about the Camden District Resolves.  Witness the reenactment of the 1774 Grand Jury Presentment\, laying forth the principles for revolution two years before the Declaration of Independence.  Slide presentation begins at noon and a dramatic presentation will take place after the slide presentation.  Cookies and cider will be served after the program. \nThis event is presented by the Kershaw County 250th and Lee County 250 committees\, the City of Camden\, Southern Campaign 1780\, Historic Camden Foundation\, and the Camden Archives and Museum.  It is part of an entire month of activities related to the Revolutionary War and colonial life in Kershaw County. \n
